Here, generations of lost letters found their final destination, a tradition long descended from the work of early “dead letter inspectors” under pioneering Postmaster General Ebenezer Hazard. You will be pleasantly surprised to know that during the 19th century, the office became one of the largest employers of women in the government– a testament to our nation’s steadfast support and appreciation of that fairer sex. Among its young clerks was Vinnie Ream, a poor midwest girl who rose from sorting dead letters at age fifteen to sculpting President Lincoln for the United States Capitol.
